The ruling of Libya's Supreme Judicial Council is a large step in positive direction
[ 17 July 2007 ]
I begin with the caveat that the information about the Libyan ruling available to us at this point of time from the new agencies is also published on the website of the Ministry of Justice of the Libyan Jamahiriya.
The ruling of the Supreme Judicial Council is a large step in positive direction. To us, the case will be closed when our compatriots return to Bulgaria. This ruling repeals the worst – it repeals the death sentence and opens a possibility to activate the Agreement on legal assistance.
Activating the Agreement involves a series of procedures, which we are prepared initiate most rapidly. We will start work on the transfer of our countrywomen as soon as tomorrow morning. A number of issues still need to be clarified. Certainly, we also expect to receive the official ruling of the Supreme Judicial Council and official information. I hope this will happen within the shortest time. We are prepared for such a scenario – transfer and apply the Agreement, and we will immediately start working on it.
We are also in contact with Commissioner Benita Ferrero Waldner, with whom I spoke a little while ago. We are in contact with our European partners, so that I hope everything necessary will be done within the shortest time both by our institutions, in which I am convinced, and by the Libyan institutions, such that this case ends happily at the soonest.
